THREE GENERALS EARN ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT HONORS
SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Washington and Lee University placed three
athletes on the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-District
III Cross Country and Track & Field teams which were announced recently. Seniors Nathan Johnson (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County)
and Steve Chambers (Christiana, Pa./Octorara Area) were named to the first
team men's squad, while junior Betsy Frayer (Grand Rapids, Mich./East
Grand Rapids) was named to the first team women's squad. Johnson is a math and economics major with a 3.706 cumulative
GPA. The ODAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year in cross country, indoor track
and outdoor track, he earned Academic All-District honors for the second
straight season. He was the 2005 ODAC Cross Country and Track and Field
Athlete of the Year after winning the ODAC Cross Country Championship
and claiming the 1,500 meter (4:04.20) and 5,000 meter events (15:47.60).
During the indoor track season, Johnson set school records in the 3,000
meters (8:37.24), 5000 meters (15:35.93) and distance medley relay (10:50.76).
During the outdoor season, he set new school bests in the 3000 meter steeplechase
(9:19.21) and distance medley relay (10:37.98). Chambers was also named to the Academic All-District team
for the second consecutive year. An economics major with a 3.886 cumulative
GPA, Chambers was the 2003 ODAC Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
He finished 16th at the 2004 ODAC Cross Country Championships (30:25.72)
and finished third overall in the 5,000 meters (16:08.80) at the 2005
ODAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Like Johnson, Chambers was
a member of the outdoor distance medley relay team which recorded a school
record time. Frayer earned her first selection to the Academic All-District
team after maintaining a 3.71 cumulative GPA as a biology and math major.
She earned Second Team All-ODAC honors in cross country during the fall
after finishing eighth at the ODAC Cross Country Championships (27:01.24)
and garnered First Team All-State accolades after placing sixth overall
at the 2004 Virginia Division III Cross Country Championships (26:03.62). The CoSIDA College Division District III consists of schools
from NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA in Virginia, North Carolina,
South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. Johnson, Chambers and Frayer will
all now be placed on the national ballot where they could earn CoSIDA
